The BMW 225i Active Tourer - a reminder that getting older is cool.

Every now and again, you get reminded that you are getting older in life. This is naturally seldom a good thing. From increasing waistlines to decreasing hairlines, the aging process is a cruel mistress. But it’s not all terrible, as the BMW 225i Active Tourer taught me last weekend.

Like most people, I first looked at the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and thought, why have BMW made a B-Class? The model extensions from the big German car makers have become a touch excessive over the last five years, and this particular BMW seemed to have really taken the cake in this department.

But then I got inside. And this is where BMW just get it right every time. Everything is in the right place, everything is very well made, and everything reminds you that you are in the right place. A touch of the start button, a sync of your phone to the iDrive system, and that reminder quickly translates to a genuine realisation.

So what exactly is the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and why does it make you okay with getting older? Well, let’s address the first part of that story. It’s a front wheel drive BMW, and very much the future in their more compact/cross over offerings, so it plays in the BMW X1 space.

It is ever so slightly smaller and shorter than the X1, but marginally wider. The driving position is an inch higher than in the X1 though, and four inches higher than in the BMW 1 Series, so you get the impression that you are driving in a relatively big car.

Space wise inside you will also get the impression it’s a pretty big car as there is ample room in every area, the back seat area in particular as they can go back and forth, and also flatten further increasing luggage space if you want to transport large sporting items, or dogs, or numerous children.

The panoramic roof option further adds to this concept of space, so in short the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a veritable fun bus waiting to take to the open road. Being a BMW though, this fun bus is also rather dynamic. The 225i version I drove has a 2.0 litre twin-turbocharged 4 cylinder engine that provides 170 glorious kilowatts. That’s 0-100 in 6.6 seconds, that’s quick, and that’s quite simply just lots and lots of fun.

Any concerns about this car being a glorified soccer mom’s mode of transport quickly evaporates as you engage the accelerator, and a quick slip into sports mode well and truly eradicates any such thoughts all together. This is another area where BMW just seem to always get it right, the drive is simply exceptional. Just looking at this car you would think there would be some compromises in the dynamic stakes, but this is not the case at all. From cruising on the highway to nipping in and out of town, it was such a pleasure.

So it ticks a lot of boxes as a car that does many things, and with every minute I spent with the car, I thought of more and more things I would like to do and places I would like to go with it.
This then lead me to the real beauty of this car, it made me okay with the fact I am nearing my mid-thirties. The fact I loved this car so much proved that I have very little to prove anymore in life, so therefore I think of things I can be doing in my spare time rather than the image that I should be projecting. Don’t get me wrong, I like a flashy sports car as much as the next guy, but in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, life and where I am in it started to suddenly make a lot more sense to me.
Let’s use this chart from below to elaborate on this.

Ordinarily you want to fight the getting older process as much as you can, but when you realise the new chapters that await, you don’t really mind that you object to the music being too loud in a bar or that you really don’t want to waste a day with a hangover unless it truly warrants it.
The BMW Active Tourer may lack the raw appeal of its coupe cousin, but who cares, there is a lot more to mature life than the aesthetic. Substance always trumps that.

What does matter is giving this car a try, it has a great deal going for it, and just may help you rediscover the joys of motoring and what quality time behind the wheel really is in your life.
