#CarOfTheWeek - The Audi A1. Audi enough to be an Audi?WRITTEN BY THE EDITOR ON FEBRUARY 02, 2015. POSTED IN WHEELS
The car I had before the Audi A1 from DNA Cars was the ferocious Mercedes C63 AMG. So naturally the step down from there was always going to be noticeable, especially with the Audi A1 being so slight in comparison.
Chat to anyone and the general consensus of the Audi A1 isn't particularly great. People will refer to it as overpriced, way too small, or simply a fancy VW Polo. Though slightly harsh, there would be truth in all those sentiments, but as I drove away from the dealership in it, I was rather drawn into what is was all about.
As a big Mini fan, I can appreciate the merits of a small hatch, and the entry level offerings of the luxury manufacturers. The A1 is of course Audi's entry offering, and the first thing that is very evident is that the A1 is well made. Audi are mostly well made, but slightly boring when compared to their competitors, but in the case of the A1, it offers a bit of excitement from the tried and tested foundations. And that is a big plus.
The 1.4 TSI is more than nippy, so the drive is good. Going back to Audis being slightly boring, the A1 has a real bit of personality to it, and daily commuting or trips to the mall/urban locations is a delight. Sure, it's not famous for space, but this car was never pitched at the sports going male market.
Despite its slightly more 'economical size', the interior still feels very premium and very Audi. Display screen and the usual fittings are there for you to enjoy, but as you find yourself more involved in the driving process, you don't really worry about this all too much.
Eye-catching design, great fun drive, well made and compact without being uncomfortable, the Audi A1 certainly has a lot going for it and indeed is worthy of the Audi badge.
But you can't help but get back to its price, that's what people always harp back to and if it offers value. Well when you consider the competition on a new price platform, you wonder what all the fuss is about:
Audi A1 1.4T S - R242 500 (NEW)
Alfa MiTo 1.4 TBi Progression - R269 990
Fiat 500 1.4 Lounge - R203 990
Mini Cooper - R274 000
So not so outrageous in the end, but naturally there is the argument that for an extra R50 000 you can get the Audi A3 equivalent, and the A3 is of course a very good car.
The Audi A1 is a very nice little car then, naturally it is more suited for the lady driver and not someone like me. But despite this I really enjoyed it, and can seriously recommend it.
