MUST WATCH - The 2011 MastersWRITTEN BY THE EDITOR ON APRIL 08, 2020. POSTED IN SPORTS
This was meant to be The Masters weekend, one of the most special occasions in all of sport. Sadly due to Covid-19, we will not see the azaleas in full bloom at Augusta National, or hear the roars of the patrons as the birdies role in. But we can look back on the brilliant 2011 edition.
If Schwartzel was American, this edition of the Masters would be considered one of the best. Naturally as at the time he was a lesser known South African, the 2011 Masters was just chalked up as an 'upset'.
The young South African's final round is something that really isn't spoken about enough to this day. He had a rollercoaster start where he chipped in for birdie on 1, then holed his approach on 3 for eagle. This may have given him a dream start, but such a thing could just as easily have derailed him.
The composure he showed to stay in the hunt though with some of golf's biggest names on the front page of the leaderboard was incredible. And then when he got to those crucial last holes, the BMT to do what he did with 4 birdies in a row is simply stuff of legend.
He knew on 15 he had to make a birdie or his chance was over. He hit a career best 6 iron straight at the flag on that par 5. Taking into account the adrenaline was flowing, he was inch perfect, but the ball rolled agonisingly on. As did his next shot leaving him a tricky 8 feet for birdie. But he nailed it though. As he did with every shot from there until putting the green jacket on.
There have been some incredible finishes to this theatre like tournament, but nobody before or since has birdied those last 4 holes en route to the title. Though many will remember this as the Masters that Rory McIlroy lost on the 10th hole, it is well and truly the Masters where Charl Schwartzel reigned supreme and claimed his righful place in golfing history.
